In basket

Getting rid of the piles of stuff

Everyday it just adds up. The dirty wash, socks and underwear, trousers and shirts. Everything gets dumped in the wash basket. Then it gets sorted: one thing at a time. No need for too many pink shirts!

My work desk too. During the day I create endless piles. Notes, mind maps, letters and more. Same principles apply as  to the wash. Sort one thing at a time. No matter what it is.

Empty in 2 minutes

I get the wash basket sorted in 2 minutes. It takes longer to sort my IN basket. But I apply the same principle – can I do it in 2 minutes? Yes. Then do it now.

What next? Who does the ironing?

Got more than one thing to do with something. Then its a project. Simple enough, but the most important question is: what’s the next action? And can I do that in 2 minutes?

Maybe more time is needed to get things done. Here are some useful guidelines:

  • Dot it - 2 minute rule
  • Delegate it - who does the ironing!
  • Defer it - needs more time
